The epic adventure follows the journey of a robot—ROZZUM unit 7134, “Roz” for short — that is shipwrecked on an uninhabited island and must learn to adapt to the harsh surroundings, gradually building relationships with the animals on the island and becoming the adoptive parent of an orphaned gosling. A brilliant premise made into a whirlwind of action combined with funny gags, but also a touching story about parents and children. The Lightbringer saga has a wonderful visual style and a functional world that, at least initially, follows the kill or be killed rules. The animals comment quite eternally and cynically on the deaths of their comrades and take the robot for a monster. The themes of caring for an orphaned caterpillar, surrogate parenting, rewriting code, getting to know the denizens of the forest, the role of outsiders in society all run like clockwork. Maybe the multiple ending could have been handled better, but the positive feelings prevail. First movie with my daughter in the theater and she was thrilled... she just wants to be a robot now. ()
