Like a Virgin

Innocence, virginity, chastity. Terms used to describe sexually non-active women emphasise purity as a virtue and their highest value. But is there any truth to the myth of virginity from the scientific perspective? The film approaches female doctors, sociologists, and anthropologists to investigate the origins of the virginity myth, whether it can be verified on the body, and what its social overlaps and moral implications are. Its idolisation is far from declining and is part of cultures worldwide. The absence of sexual experience, itself vaguely definable, often defines a woman’s value in society and her family’s honor, but it can also be a matter of free choice. There are so many meanings, anxieties, and expectations attached to virginity—but does it also exist physically? (Academia Film Olomouc)
