At the end of the story, Zatoichi says something that is absolutely defining for his character: "I just wanted to go to the celebration. I didn't think I'd need to draw my sword." This is the beauty and curse of his character. Problems are drawn to him, no matter where he looks or where he goes. Fate simply doesn't favor him, but he is like a perpetual motion machine and keeps moving forward. And I'm glad for that.
