Lőrinc Gáthy's (in the Serbian version: Mr. Wickfield) wife dies when his son is born. A woman from his kinship offered to look after the orphaned child and the household, but Gáthy refused because he wowed at the grave of his wife that he would get a real "mother" for their orphaned son. He follows his plan in the following way: He takes his son to Budapest to foster parents then marries Borbála Zehernyei. And when his second son is born from this new marriage, he takes the child despite his wife's protest to the same foster parents who take care his first son. In vain she begs, do not betray their whereabouts. Five years later he brought the two little boys, Pali (in the Serbian version of Willy Wickfield) and Laci (in the Serbian version: Roby Wickfield), but does not tell the woman which is her own child, not to make a distinction between them, so both are equally loved. Gáthy promises that the smaller boy's twentieth birthday, when they both get along without a mother, reveals the truth. Meanwhile, war breaks out, and both boys enlisted. Only Laci (Roby) returns home from the front. The twentieth birthday arrives. Gáthy gives the documents about the children to his wife from which she finally can reveal which is her own child, but she is no longer wants to know the documents, she burns them in the fireplace.
